Anyone Know About GM Warranty on Paint Issues?

I’m looking for some advice regarding my Chevrolet’s paint warranty. I recently noticed a few spots where the paint seems to have defects, and I’m not sure if it falls under the warranty coverage offered by GM.

Questions I Have:

  • What is covered under the GM warranty for paint?
I’ve heard that some minor defects might be covered, but what about things like fading or peeling?
  • How long does the paint warranty last?
Is it generally a couple of years, or does it vary depending on the model?
  • What conditions could void the warranty?
I want to make sure I’m not inadvertently making a mistake that could affect my coverage.

Additional Details:

I drive a 2021 Chevrolet Equinox, and while I take good care of it, I’m concerned that these paint defects are going to get worse. Has anyone had experience with the warranty process for paint issues? What steps do I need to take if I want GM to inspect the paint? Any insights or personal experiences would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

Looking forward to hearing back from anyone with experience or knowledge on this topic!

I believe GM’s paint warranty typically covers any manufacturing defects for up to 3 years or 36,000 miles. It’s worth checking your owner’s manual for specifics.

That’s correct! However, it doesn’t cover issues like acid rain or bird droppings—just defects in the paint itself.

I had my car’s paint checked under warranty last year, and they were pretty strict about the conditions. Make sure to keep all maintenance receipts handy!

So, if the paint is flaking or fading, would that qualify for a claim under the warranty? I’ve seen a few reports about it.

Yes, flaking might qualify, but fading usually doesn’t, unless it’s due to a defect. Always best to reach out to a dealer for clarity.

Anyone know if repainting due to a previous accident affects the warranty? I’m a bit concerned.

Yes, it can affect the warranty. If the paint wasn’t handled correctly, it could void the warranty for that area.

I find it a bit annoying that some warranties are so limited. Why can’t they cover more like sun damage or rust? Seems unfair.

Totally agree! It’s like they want to keep their costs down, but we pay for the warranty!

I recommend going to your dealer with all documents, like the warranty and receipts. They can guide you through the process.

Sometimes I wonder if these warranties are just marketing gimmicks. I’ve had cars with paint issues outside the warranty period and no help at all!

I think they just want to make sure you’re taking care of your car properly. Have to find a way to laugh at these warranty considerations!

I’ve had issues with my GM car’s paint peeling after just a couple of years. I contacted their customer service, and thankfully they covered it under warranty! It does depend on your mileage and service records though.

That’s good to hear! I also had some chipping on my hood. They initially denied my claim but after some polite back-and-forth, they agreed to repaint it.

GM’s paint warranty seems a bit hit or miss. I’ve read reports of folks with fading issues being denied coverage because of ‘normal wear and tear.’ It’s frustrating when paint starts to look bad quickly.

I feel your pain, @tina69. I had my Malibu’s paint start to fade after just three years, but I was lucky enough to have a dealer that helped escalate my claim. Just don’t give up!

Have you guys tried contacting GM directly? I’ve heard they can be more helpful than dealerships. Just make sure you have all your documentation ready - receipts, photos, everything.

Great tip, @udixon! When I had a paint issue, I submitted everything online, and they reached out relatively quick. It’s all about persistence with these warranties!
