Best Oil for 2017 Silverado 5.3?

I’m looking for some advice on the best oil to use for my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3L engine. I want to make sure I’m keeping up with the manufacturer’s recommendations for engine performance and longevity.

Factors to Consider:

  • Viscosity: I’ve heard mixed opinions on whether to go with 0W-20 or 5W-30. What’s your take on this?
  • Brand Recommendations: Are brands like AC-Delco and Mobil 1 really worth it? How do they compare in terms of performance and price?
  • User Experiences: If you’ve been using a specific type of oil, how has it worked for you? Any noticeable differences in engine performance or gas mileage?

Request for Help:

I genuinely want to make an informed decision for my Silverado’s next oil change, so any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

For my 2017 Silverado 5.3, I always recommend using synthetic oil. It’s more efficient and gives better protection compared to conventional oil. Plus, it lasts longer! Anyone else agree?

I totally agree, jonathan52! Synthetic oils do perform better, especially in extreme temperatures.

I’ve switched to synthetic blend for my Silverado because it offers a balance of performance and price. It seems to work well without breaking the bank!

Interesting point, bbryant! I’ve read that synthetic blends can provide decent protection too. Just curious, though: how often do you change it?

I’ve been going with conventional oil for years and haven’t had issues. It’s cheaper and gets the job done for most daily driving. Anyone else use conventional?

Isn’t conventional oil a bit outdated for our trucks now, omarwarren? I’d be cautious using it regularly, especially in the long run.

Why do you think synthetic is really necessary? Conventional works fine for a lot of people.

Using synthetic could improve fuel economy and extend engine life, williamroberts. I’d say the pros outweigh the cons. You just can’t go wrong with it!

Does anyone know if using synthetic can void warranties on the Silverado? Just trying to play it safe here!

I’ve never heard of synthetic oil voiding a warranty, evanmarshall. They usually recommend it! Just keep your receipts to be safe.

You’d think engines would run smoother with synthetic, but who knows? It’s like giving your truck a haircut - you think it would help, but it still has a mind of its own!

Haha, good analogy, anna25! Just like with haircuts, what works for one doesn’t always work for another. It’s all about finding your truck’s style!

But let’s keep in mind that what works in one climate might not in another. Reflecting on where you drive is key to picking the right oil choice!

I’m using Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic oil for my 2017 Silverado 5.3. I change it every 5,000 miles, but I drive mostly on highways. If you’re in stop-and-go traffic, you might want to change it more frequently.

That’s great advice! I drive my Silverado for short trips, and I usually change the oil every 3,000 miles just to be safe. It feels better for the engine.

I agree with jrichardson! I’ve heard synthetic oil can last longer, but for those of us in city driving, more frequent changes can help maintain engine performance.

How often to change really depends on your usage. If you tow or carry heavy loads, you might want to go with a shorter interval. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Absolutely! I tow a trailer often and I change my oil every 4,000 miles. Better safe than sorry, right?

I’m curious if anyone here has tried higher mileage oils? I’ve been hearing about those and whether they make a difference for engines with a bit more wear.
