Does the GM 6.0 Have AFM? Looking for Insight!

AFM stands for Active Fuel Management. It allows the engine to deactivate half of its cylinders under light-load conditions to save fuel. It’s generally a bonus but can have some quirks.

I’ve read some people find the AFM system troublesome. Has anyone had major issues with it, like engine performance drops?

It’s certainly a point of contention. Some owners complain about lifter issues when AFM is engaged. Just something to consider if you’re looking at a higher mileage vehicle.

Hah! Who knew an engine could be so complicated? My buddy has a 2015 Silverado with AFM and swears by it. It’s always good to have friends with experiences!

Friends are everything! Seems like the newer models handle AFM better. What would you recommend for someone avoiding potential lifter problems?

If you’re worried about AFM issues, I’d recommend looking at models without AFM entirely. The 6.0 is a robust engine even without that feature, especially in the earlier models like the 2005 Silverado.

Thanks for all this insight! I feel more informed now. It’s great to see everyone sharing their experiences! Anyone want to share favorite models?

Yes, the GM 6.0 does have AFM (Active Fuel Management). It’s designed to improve fuel efficiency but can lead to some issues down the line, especially with lifters.

That’s right, I’ve heard lifter failure is quite common. Has anyone experienced that firsthand?

I’ve had my 6.0 for a couple of years now, and the AFM can be a pain, especially with the ticking noise. Regular oil changes seem to help, though.

That’s a good tip! I’m curious, what oil do you recommend for these engines?

I use full synthetic oil, it’s worked nicely. The AFM issue is always lurking but keeping everything well-lubricated makes a difference!

For those with lifter noise, try the AFM disable options. It’s a hot topic; some swear by it, while others prefer to keep everything stock and manage it.

Has anyone here had luck with that? I’m on the fence about disabling it.

Disabling has worked wonders for me. The engine runs smoother without AFM messing with it. Just be sure to reprogram the ECU after!

Yeah, I’ve heard that can really help. But isn’t it a bit risky? I’d be worried about voiding the warranty.

Totally get your concern! I feel like everything has risks these days. What’s the point of having AFM if it causes issues?

It’s ironic, isn’t it? You buy a fuel-efficient truck and end up troubleshooting engine issues! Let’s face it, it’s a love/hate relationship.

Haha, for sure! Just remember, AFM is like a diet – looks good on paper but can cause serious frustration in reality!
