Looking for Tips on 2.8 Duramax Catch Can Setup

Introduction

I’m reaching out to the community because I’m exploring catch can systems for my 2.8 Duramax engine found in my Chevrolet.

What is a Catch Can?

For those who may not be familiar, a catch can is a device used to capture and hold oil vapors and other contaminants that might normally re-enter the intake system. This can help prevent carbon buildup and improve engine efficiency over time.

Why I’m Interested

I’ve done a bit of reading and it seems like installing a catch can can provide several benefits:

  • Reduce Oil Sludge Buildup: Keeping my engine cleaner by preventing oil vapors from condensing.
  • Improve Performance: Potentially enhancing engine performance with cleaner air intake.
  • Extend Engine Life: By reducing carbon deposits that can affect the lifespan of the engine.

Questions:

  1. Best Brands/Models: What are some of the best catch can brands you’ve had positive experiences with? Any recommendations for the 2.8 Duramax?
  2. Installation Tips: What’s the installation process like? Is it something that can be done at home, or would I need a professional?
  3. Maintenance: How often do these catch cans need to be emptied? Any tips on maintenance to keep everything running smoothly?

I appreciate any advice you can share. Looking forward to hearing your experiences and recommendations!

Conclusion

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. The information I gather from this community is invaluable, and I hope I can contribute back as I learn more about optimizing and maintaining my 2.8 Duramax. Let’s get those engines running clean and efficient!

Using a catch can for the 2.8 Duramax can significantly reduce oil buildup in your intake, which ultimately leads to improved performance and longevity of the engine. I’ve seen better throttle response since installing mine.

I completely agree, richardsjoseph! My engine runs smoother, and I’ve even noticed a slight increase in fuel efficiency since I added a catch can.

Catch cans prevent oil from contaminating the intake manifold, which can lead to carbon build-up. This setup has definitely added to my engine’s longevity. I can’t recommend it enough!

That’s a great point, ewebb! Less contamination means less maintenance down the road. It’s a win-win!

I installed my catch can about six months ago. The engine feels more responsive and I swear it sounds better too! Anyone else notice a difference in sound?

Yes! I noticed the same thing! The engine definitely has a deeper growl to it. It’s amazing what a catch can can do.

Does anyone have specific recommendations on which catch can to buy? I’ve heard some can actually restrict airflow if not designed properly.

I went with the Mishimoto catch can—great quality and easy to install. Highly recommend it!

My buddy uses a cheap catch can and has had zero issues. Just make sure to check it regularly. It all depends on the quality of your install, not just the can itself.

That’s true! It’s about maintaining it too. I usually empty mine every oil change.

Not to bring negativity to the conversation, but I’ve heard mixed reviews. Some say they haven’t seen any measurable benefits. What do you think?

I get that perspective, but I think the performance improvements often depend on how you drive and how well you maintain the can.

Catch cans should be mandatory for diesel engines. They save money in the long run, and for the price, they pay for themselves quickly. Proven fact!

Catch cans also add a bit of flair to the engine bay! Mine is bright red, and it really stands out. Functionality and aesthetics in one!

I’ve been thinking about installing a catch can on my 2.8 Duramax too. From my research, you’ll need some basic tools like a socket set, tubing cutter, and a drill. Always good to plan for any surprises during installation!

Great point! I recommend keeping some spare hose clamps on hand. They can be lifesavers if you need to make adjustments later on.

Installation can get tricky around the engine bay. Make sure to secure everything tightly. I lost my first catch can because I underestimated engine vibrations!

Ouch! That sounds frustrating. Did you use any extra brackets for support? Maybe that’s a good precaution for others.

I used metal brackets for mine, and it worked like a charm! It’s crucial to check your setup every now and then to avoid any future mishaps.
