Looking for Tips on 454 Bored 30 Over HP Mods

Seeking Advice on Performance Mods for My 454 Engine

Hey fellow gearheads,
I’m currently diving into some performance enhancements for my Chevrolet with a Big Block 454 V8 engine. I’ve been reading about boring the engine 30 over to boost horsepower, but I’m looking for some first-hand experiences or advice on what to expect from these modifications.

Here are some specifics I’m curious about:

  • Power Gains: For those of you who have done a 30 over bore, how significant were the horsepower gains?
  • Supporting Mods: Did you add any other modifications (like a better intake or exhaust) that helped maximize the performance?
  • Durability: Were there any concerns regarding engine longevity or reliability after boring?
  • Tuning: How critical was it to get a custom tune after performing these modifications?

What I Currently Have:

  • A stock 454 with decent mileage
  • Looking to improve throttle response and overall power, especially for some track days

My Goals:

I’m aiming for a good balance between street driving and performance without compromising reliability too much. Would love to hear what others have done and any tips you might have to share.

Thanks in advance for any insights! Looking forward to the suggestions.

Cheers,
Nathan

If you’re looking to boost horsepower on a 454 bored engine, start with a good set of cylinder heads. Upgrading to aluminum heads can significantly reduce weight and improve airflow.

Great advice! I’d also suggest investing in a camshaft upgrade. A good performance cam can really change the character of your engine.

Don’t forget about fuel delivery! A larger carburetor can really help with airflow. I’ve had good luck with a Holley 850 on my setup.

Absolutely! But also consider the intake manifold. A high-performance manifold can maximize the benefits of your carb upgrade.

A higher compression ratio can also help increase horsepower. Just make sure you have the right fuel to handle it!

Good point! After I increased my compression, I had to adjust my ignition timing. Getting that dialed in is key.

I also think auxiliary mods like headers and a performance exhaust system can make a huge difference. It’s all about breathing!

So true! I switched to long-tube headers last year and noticed an impressive boost in my torque!

Yes! I’ve seen friends with dyno-tuned setups gain quite a bit of horsepower.

I’m considering a full rebuild on my 454. Any recommendations on piston upgrades or bore size?

For high HP, consider forged pistons for durability. A 30 over bore can be a sweet spot for performance without compromising too much reliability.

I’ve spent so much on my mods, my wallet feels the strain! But the thrill of driving is worth every penny.

That’s the spirit! If you’re not crying at the gas station, are you really living?!

I recently upgraded my 454 with a 30 over bore kit from Edelbrock. The performance gains have been remarkable! It’s definitely a solid investment if you’re looking for power and reliability.

That’s great to hear! What specific model did you go with? I’m weighing my options and any insights would be helpful.

When considering 30 over kits, make sure to check out the bore size compatibility. Some kits can be a hassle to install, affecting reliability. Do your homework!

So true! I had a rough time with mine at first. Any tips on making the installation smoother?

Stick with reputable brands like Summit or Forged. I’ve heard mixed reviews about off-brand kits; you might end up spending more over time due to reliability issues.

Agreed! You definitely get what you pay for. I’ve been considering the Jegs kits too. Anyone have experience with those?
