Need Help with Chevy HEI Ignition Wiring

The '75 Nova has different color coding. Typically, the 12V supply is red, and the ignition wire is brown. I can create a side-by-side comparison if that helps!

That would be super helpful! It can be so confusing when dealing with different models. I just finished up a HEI install on my '87 Monte Carlo; it was a breeze with a clear diagram.

I’m kind of new to all this; can someone break down the basic steps for connecting the HEI ignition? Looking for a tutorial that covers the fundamentals!

Sure! First, ensure your battery is disconnected. Next, connect the red wire to the positive terminal, the brown to the ignition switch, and make sure your ground is solid. Follow with the pickup coil wires!

Thanks, courtney79! Adding a visual step-by-step could make it easier to follow. I’ll draft one for my '90 C1500 and share it here.

You’re on the right track, mejiajennifer! Diagrams coupled with step-by-step instructions make it less intimidating. And honestly, who hasn’t bricked their ignition at least once?

LOL, so true! I still have nightmares of wiring my HEI wrong on my '82 Chevette. It was a comedy of errors. But seriously, diagrams would have saved me hours!

Comparing wiring mistakes is a great way to learn! I’m preparing a wiring diagram for my '78 Camaro as well. It should sync up closely with the other models discussed.

Are you planning to include the unique factors that differentiate the wiring setups? That could clarify a lot!

Definitely, mwilliams! Knowing those differences can save a lot of headache. I can compile a list of key variations for each model too. Let’s help each other out here!

Adding variations will be great! I’m wondering how our Chevy enthusiast group can have more tutorials like this. It’s super useful! Thoughts?

I think we could create a pinned thread exclusively for wiring diagrams and tutorials. That might help keep everything organized!

I can help with that! Common issues with Chevy HEI systems include bad connections. If you notice a no-start condition, start checking the connections at the distributor and coil. Make sure they’re tight and free of corrosion.

I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be a weak ignition coil. It was intermittent, so testing it with a multimeter helped clarify the issue!

That’s a great point about the coil, marie42! Also, make sure you’re using the correct spark plug gap. Too wide or narrow can cause misfiring. It’s a simple check that can make a big difference!

What’s the best way to test the HEI system overall? I’m just getting into this and would love to learn more about the diagnostics.

Start by checking for power to the distributor. You can do this by using a test light or multimeter at the ignition module connector. If you have no power, you may need to trace back to the ignition switch.

Another common issue is the pickup coil inside the distributor. If you’ve ruled out everything else and are still having trouble, check that as it can cause erratic spark or misfires.

Good point, joseph95! Sometimes, troubleshooting is just about methodically going through each component until you pinpoint the trouble. Patience is key!

I hear ya, normanmarcus! I once spent a day chasing down a misfire caused by a loose wire. My patience wore thin until I found it, haha! It was a satisfying fix though!
