RAM JET 350 DISCRIPTION | ![]() |
Ram Jet 350, Factory Fuel Injection For Your Hotrod.
![]() Legal Note: The Ram Jet 350 is emissions legal only on vehicles made from 1979-or-earlier that were originally equipped with a carburetor. |
P/N 12499120 [Old P/N 12495515] Both the Ram Jet 350 and the Ram Jet 502 have proven their performance and reliability from many years of service as a Marine engine before GMPP made these Land versions. You may recall the Ram Jet brand from the GM mechanical fuel injection systems of the 50’s. Back then everyone wanted a “fuelie” and today that’s even more true. GM Performance Parts has brought back the Ram Jet name with its all new electronic port fuel injection systems for small-block and big-block crate engines. The small-block Ram Jet 350’s intake manifold is styled like the Ram Jet of yesterday, with a styled intake plenum - but that’s where the similarities end. Instead of a mechanical injection system, the Ram Jet 350 is fed by a state-of the art, electronically controlled port fuel injection system. The Ram Jet 350 uses state of the art components developed by GM to give you all of the benefits of modern electronic engine management. Who better to fuel inject your hot rod than the people who build 5 million fuel injected cars and trucks per year, including the one in your driveway. Unlike some after market systems, Ram Jet offers great cold starts, hot starts, always ideal air to fuel ratios and exceptional throttle response, power and derivability. This is all enabled by the sophisticated, latest-generation MEFI 4 controller, which has improved electronics and closed loop capability (compared with the previous MEFI 3 system). This new controller fits in the palm of your hand and was originally developed by GM Powertrain for marine applications. MEFI 4 is ideally suited for use in street rods, street machines and sportsman racers. Installation is simple, the Ram Jet 350 is an assembled 350 crate engine with Vortec cylinder heads, Ram Jet induction system, wiring harness, MEFI 4 controller, and detailed instructions. Once installed in the vehicle, a user needs only to supply 12V power and fuel. A tried-and-true 350 small-block combination anchors the Ram Jet 350. It is designed for long-lasting durability and pump-gas compatibility, with cast iron Vortec cylinder heads, a hydraulic roller camshaft and 9.4:1 compression ratio. The 350 horsepower Ram Jet 350 from GM Performance Parts makes it easy to have electronic fuel injection on any 1979 or older vehicle originally equipped with a carburetor. GMPP delivers the engine with all the wiring harness and detailed instructions. So quit “fuelin” around with carbs and give your vintage ride a modern injection of performance! The Ram Jet 350 has it all, great nostalgic styling, derivability unsurpassed by carburetors or after market fuel injection, power to spare and a hot rod idle that sounds like Woodward Avenue in 1969 all over again. GM Performance Parts is “More Than Just Power” and once you’ve driven a Ram Jet you’ll understand why. Please note the fuel pump recommendations in the Ram Jet instruction manual. |

Note¹: This is correct. The Ram Jet 350 comes with a two bolt main block. Please don’t call or write us about this.
We have been getting communications from people saying that other sites say that it is a 4 bolt main block. This was
originally what GMPP had stated, and it was an error. They have since corrected this in their year 2001 GMPP catalog. Note: Distributor with melonized steel gear MUST be used with long-blocks, partial engine, and engines with steel camshafts, or engine damage can occur. The distributor that comes with this engine has the proper hardened gear. |

INSTALLATION NOTES | ![]() |
The Ram Jet 350 comes with a detailed installation sheet as well as the Marine version manual that can be purchased from us separately. Some parts will not be the same in the Marine manual as what is on the Land version of the Ram Jet 350, but most parts will be correct. Check with us before ordering parts just to make sure. The manual is loaded with information and even includes step by step trouble shooting help. GMPP has not made a Land version of this manual yet. Comes with a 14” 168 tooth flywheel P/N 10105832 for manual transmission installation. An externally balanced flexplate will be required for an automatic transmission installation. Requires a 12V power source. See instructions for fuel pump recommendations. Intended for 1979 and earlier pre-emissions street vehicles or all off-road vehicles. Not intended for marine use. There is no warranty for street engines use for marine applications or use. Contact a GM marine dealer for marine engines. The knock sensor must be installed where the block drain plug is. Remove the drain plug and replace with the knock sensor. The knock sensor P/N 10456126 must be in contact with coolant to work properly. Fuel pressure should be between 34 to 47 lbs. With the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator disconnected and at idle, the pressure should be 47 lbs and at idle with no load (vacuum line connected) it should be 35 lbs. A non-adjustable fuel pressure regulator comes with the Ram Jet 350. A permanent fuel pressure gauge is recommended. One will have to be purchased separately. Important! MEFI 4 computer has a “green” mode that controls rpm during the break-in period; from start-up to the end of the first hour is 4,000 rpm, the second hour is 4500 rpm, and the third hour is 5500 rpm. The Ram Jet 350 comes with a GM diagnostic trouble code tool P/N 12489400 with which you will need to make sure you are setting the timing correctly according to the installation instructions. Technical Notes: The installation instructions is missing the information on how to connect the o2 sensor and IAT. The wires are not labeled and described in the instructions either. (Red Fused/ Battery, Purple/Ignition, Gray/Tach, White/Digital Tach) Problem - Ram Jets going into “limp home” or shutting down completely, but turning the ignition off and then restarting it solves the problem temporarily. This problem occurs when the temp sender is located in the upper radiator tank and when coolant level drops, the sender is not in the coolant. This causes a false “HOT” signal and shuts the ECM down. Do not use this arrangement and place your sensor some place other than the radiator for best results. Requires - 3/8” Inlet Fuel Line and 3/8” Return Fuel Line Don't bother calling anyone for tech help until you have verified you have the correct fuel pressure and have the correct size fuel line! Please dear and loyal customers, don't waist everyone's time, just do it. Then if you still have problems and nothing else on this page or our message board helps, then we will be glad to help. |

RAM JET 350 OPTIONS | ![]() |
GM Optional Air Cleaner P/N 12498951 This air cleaner was designed by K&N for GMPP to GM’s specifications and standards to work with the Ram Jet 350. Round To Oval Tapered Type, No Offset. Mounting Flange Inside Diameter: 3-5/8” The flange will stretch up to 1/16”. Filter Widest External Dimension: 4-5/8” Filter Body Length: 5-1/2” Flange Length: 1/2” Straight Flange Offset: None End Cap Width: 4-3/8” End Cap Height: 3-1/4” Note: Though this is a very good air filter, it will not work with the IAT sensor that comes with the Ram Jet 350. You may have to make a short extension tube that is drilled and taped next to the air filter to allow the IAT sensor to be used with it. If you make a tube for this with a groove for an O-Ring, the Street and Performance O-Ring made for the air filter below can be used for this. You should get the O-Ring first to make sure you make the groove for the tube correctly. This is only one way to handle this problem. We are sure there are many other imaginative ways a person could come up with that will also work. |

|
|
Note - One suggestion on how to deal with the IAT sensor problem is as follows: The intake air temp sensor needs to mounted in front of the throttle body as far away from the butterflys as possible. You can make a small bracket & mount it inside the air filter. GM should do something about this (supply a bracket / drill & tap a spot to mount it, etc) but they haven’t yet. |

manifold dimensions of the Ram Jet 350. Pictures where taken of SBRJAC mounted on the Ram Jet 350 intake. P/N SBRJAC - Show Chromed, 3” Filter P/N SBRJACP - Show Polished, 3” Filter The four pictures below show how to use this air filter with the IAT sensor that comes with the Ram Jet 350. The tag for the wire that plugs into the IAT sensor is miss labeled. On the ones produced now it says MAT sensor instead of IAT sensor. GM may correct this in time. |

The four pictures above show the Accel DFI fuel pressure gauge (P/N 74726) that we recommend for the Ram Jet 350 and how it mounts on the engine. It comes with everything you will need to install it. We highly recommend that you get a fuel pressure gauge for the Ram Jet 350 or at a minimum, have your fuel pressure checked to make sure it is correct. We have found that many of the problems blamed on the Ram Jet 350 injection system are caused by incorrect fuel pressure and not the injection system. The Ram Jet 350 requires 34-47 psi to operate correctly. At idle and no load it should show 35 psi and with the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator disconnected at idle, it should show 47 psi.

The pictures above show the Oxygen Sensor and the weld-in bung that comes with it. The bung is threaded for the Oxygen Sensor to screw into it as shown in the picture to the right. The bung itself is shown in the picture on the left. The Oxygen Sensor connects to the wiring harness connector labeled Oxygen Sensor as shown in the picture on the right. The bung must be welded to your exhaust system. There are instructions on the best location and angle to weld this on your exhaust system in the installation instructions that come with the Ram Jet 350.
We have even more available options shown on the Ram Jet 350 More Options And Intake Dimensions page. This page was getting too full to put them all here. |
