2012 Chevy Cruze Rough Idle Issues - Need Help!

I’ve been experiencing a rough idle with my 2012 Chevy Cruze, and I’m hoping to get some advice on how to tackle this issue. It’s been running a bit rough when the engine is idling, and I can’t quite figure out what’s wrong. Here are some details:

Symptoms

  • The engine shakes slightly when stopped at red lights.
  • Sometimes the RPM fluctuates a bit.
  • It feels like it’s going to stall out occasionally.

Things I’ve Checked

  1. Spark Plugs: I inspected the spark plugs, and they looked okay but might need replacing.
  2. Air Filter: The air filter was quite dirty, so I replaced it recently, but the issue persists.
  3. Fuel System: I added a fuel cleaner to the tank, but no noticeable improvement.

Questions

  • Has anyone else had similar issues with their Cruze?
  • What do you think could be causing the rough idle?
  • Are there any specific tests I should perform to diagnose the problem?

What To Do Next?

I’m considering checking the fuel injectors and maybe running a diagnostic test, but I’d love to hear any recommendations or suggestions from the community.

Thanks in advance for your help! Any insights, shared experiences, or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve had similar issues with my '12 Cruze. It turned out to be the spark plugs. They were really worn out! Have you checked yours yet?

Yes, I replaced the spark plugs but still have a rough idle. Any other possibilities?

You might want to look into the fuel injectors next. Clogged or failing injectors can definitely cause rough idling. Have you tested them?

Not yet! I also read that vacuum leaks could be a culprit. Anyone had experiences with that?

Absolutely! I’ve fixed a vacuum leak in mine once. It can really affect the engine’s performance. Check your vacuum hoses for cracks!

I had a rough idle problem too, and it was simply a bad engine sensor. The throttle position sensor was faulty. Might want to look at that as well.

That’s a good point! Maybe I should get the codes read before throwing more money at parts.

Smart move! Also, make sure to check your air intake system. A dirty filter can also mess with idling.

I never thought about the air filter! Seems like it could be the simplest solution.

Also, don’t forget about the fuel filter! A clogged fuel filter can starve the engine, leading to stalling and rough idling.

Now I feel like I’m chasing a rabbit hole! Which one do I check first?!

Why not start with the cheapest fix, like the air filter? Then go from there. Sometimes the little things make the biggest difference!

Or just take it to a mechanic and make it their problem! Just joking, of course. But sometimes professional help is needed.

That’s true! I’ll definitely try these first before going that route, though.

I’ve been having rough idle issues with my 2012 Cruze too! It’s so frustrating. Has anyone figured out the cause?

Check your spark plugs! A misfire can often cause rough idling, and they’re pretty easy to replace yourself.

Spark plugs seem like a good starting point, but you might want to also look at the air filter. A clogged filter can cause rough idling as well.

Good point! I had a similar issue with my car and replacing the plugs fixed it. Worth a try!

Remember to check for any error codes; using an OBD-II scanner could lead you straight to the problem! It’s a great DIY tool.
