2016 Chevy Sonic Touch Screen Not Responding - Help Needed!

I’ve been having a frustrating experience with my 2016 Chevy Sonic’s touch screen lately, and I really need some advice. One day it was working just fine, and the next, it decided to stop responding completely. Here are some details and what I’ve tried so far:

Symptoms:

  • The touch screen remains black, but the car’s audio system still functions.
  • Buttons and controls on the side don’t respond.
  • Occasionally, it shows a flicker of life, but it’s short-lived.

Troubleshooting Steps I’ve Tried:

  1. Restarting the System: I attempted to turn off the car completely and then restart it several times. This didn’t seem to help at all.
  2. Checking Connections: I looked for any loose wiring behind the unit, but everything appears to be securely connected from what I can see.
  3. Performing a Factory Reset: I read about doing a factory reset for the infotainment system, but I’m a bit hesitant about losing my saved settings and losing functionality. Is this something worth trying?
  4. Software Updates: I checked if there are any updates available for my system, but it appears that it’s up-to-date.

Questions:

  • Has anyone else experienced this issue with their Chevy Sonic’s touch screen?
  • What steps did you take to fix it?
  • Is there a risk of damaging anything if I attempt a hard reset?
  • Would a dealership be my best bet for repairs, or are there DIY solutions that could work?

I appreciate any insights or tips you all can provide. This touchscreen is such a convenient feature, and not having it working is really inconvenient for me. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think the touch screen issues could be due to a software glitch. Have you tried rebooting your system? Sometimes a simple reset can fix it!

I did! It didn’t help. I’m beginning to think it might be a hardware issue. Any ideas on how to check that?

It could be a faulty connection inside the dash. Sometimes, the cables can become loose or disconnected. A quick inspection might uncover the problem.

That makes sense! I’m not very handy—would it be best to take it to a dealership?

Before heading to the dealership, check for any updates on the infotainment system. Software updates can resolve many issues and are often overlooked.

I forgot about that! What if there are no updates available?

You might want to consider that it could be a touch screen failure. Unfortunately, they can fail over time. I’ve heard mixed reviews on repairs versus replacements.

That’s disheartening! How do you even start troubleshooting something like that?

I would recommend reaching out to a car electronics specialist. They can diagnose if it’s a touch screen issue without breaking the bank first.

Thanks! I’ll definitely do that. At this point, I just want it to work again!

Or you could just use your phone! Best GPS out there can save you from this touchscreen nightmare. But, seriously, I hope you get it sorted soon!

I had a similar issue with my 2016 Chevy Sonic. You can try a soft reset by pressing and holding the power button for about 10 seconds. This often restores functionality.

Sounds like a plan! I’ll give that a shot. Thanks for the tip!

If the reset doesn’t work, check for software updates! Sometimes outdated software can cause touchscreen issues. Go to your settings to see if there’s an update available.

Great suggestion! How do I know if my software is up to date?

To check for updates, go to ‘Settings’ and then ‘About’. You should see ‘Software Updates’ there. If it’s not updated, follow the prompts to install it.

Also, if the touchscreen still doesn’t respond, consider disconnecting the car battery for about 10 minutes. It might help reset the whole system!

That sounds a bit extreme! But hey, desperate times, right? Hopefully, it won’t void any warranties!

Don’t forget to reconnect everything properly! If these steps don’t work, it might be best to seek professional help; there could be a hardware issue.
