2016 Silverado Tailgate Assist Not Working - Any Fixes?

I had a weird issue where one of the connectors was loose. It caused intermittent problems. Tightened it up, and it worked like new! Always a good idea to check the connections first.

That’s a great find, Bradley! Sometimes the simplest fixes are the hardest to see until you really look. Did you have to do anything special to make it more secure?

I used a bit of electrical tape to make sure the connection stayed firm after tightening it, and it worked wonders! Would recommend checking each connection with slight tugging to ensure they’re not loose.

This is turning into a tailgate support group! :joy: I just wanted to add, if everything else fails, consider reaching out to a local mechanic. They often have the tools to diagnose issues quickly.

It’s true! Sometimes it’s easier to let the pros handle it—especially if you’re not comfortable with DIY fixes. But if you’re up for it, I’ve found videos on YouTube that show how to do a full inspection step by step.

YouTube to the rescue! I’ll check that out. I appreciate all the suggestions. Any other common problems I should be aware of?

One common issue is that the tailgate release button can malfunction. If you’re not hearing any sounds when you push it, that could be a sign something’s off. A multimeter can help in testing it.

That makes sense! I’ll definitely check that too. Thank you for the insight, Sarah—it’s much appreciated!

No problem! These tailgate issues can be very frustrating. Just take it step by step. And if you find the culprit, don’t forget to share your success story here—it might help someone else!

I will! It’s kind of fascinating how many things can go wrong with something seemingly simple like a tailgate. Thanks, everyone, for the support. Let’s hope it’s an easy fix!

I had the same issue with my 2016 Silverado tailgate assist! I ended up buying an aftermarket kit from Amazon called ‘Tailgate Helper.’ It was easy to install and works like a charm!

That’s awesome to hear! Did you find the installation process straightforward? I’m looking for something that’s easy to manage myself.

I tried various aftermarket kits, but the ‘EZ Down’ system worked best for me. The installation took about 30 minutes, and it feels very sturdy compared to the factory one.

Great info, Jared! I’ll check out the ‘EZ Down.’ Did you notice any difference in performance versus the factory assist?

Yes, definitely! The ‘EZ Down’ feels smoother, and I’ve had no issues since installing it. But I’ve also heard good things about the ‘Dewitt’s Tailgate Assist.’ Anyone tried that one?

I have the ‘Dewitt’s’ kit on my Silverado, and it’s fantastic! Very sturdy and great support. Installation was a breeze too.

If you’re looking for budget-friendly, I’d recommend the ‘Tailgate Ease’ kit. It’s cheaper and works well. I’ve had mine for a year and still going strong!

Sounds appealing, Tyler! What’s your take on the installation complexity? I’m not very handy.

Installation was super simple! Just a few screws and you’re done. But if you’re not comfortable, a friend could help you out to make it easier.
