2016 Silverado Tailgate Assist Not Working - Any Fixes?

Recently, I’ve been having some trouble with the tailgate assist feature on my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado. It seems like it just isn’t working as it used to, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue or has any tips on potential fixes.

Symptoms of the Issue

  • Not Opening Smoothly: When I try to lower the tailgate, it feels like it’s a bit stuck. It doesn’t drop smoothly like it used to.
  • No Assist Function: The assist mechanism doesn’t seem to activate at all. I’ll have to lower it manually, which is a hassle.
  • Odd Noises: Occasionally, I hear some strange noises when I attempt to open the tailgate, which makes me think there’s something wrong with the mechanism.

Possible Causes

I’ve done some searching online and found a few possible causes that might be contributing to the problem:

  • Worn Out Components: The assist feature could be due for some repairs or replacements.
  • Lack of Lubrication: Maybe a bit of grease in the right spots could help the mechanism function properly.
  • Electrical Issues: Since it’s a slightly more tech-savvy feature, there could be an electrical issue preventing it from working as intended.

What I’ve Tried

  • Lubrication: I’ve tried lubricating the hinges and the areas around the tailgate, but that didn’t seem to improve the situation.
  • Inspecting the Mechanism: I looked at the lift assist mechanism and didn’t notice any visible damage, but I’m not an expert.

Seeking Help

If anyone has had a similar issue or knows of a good way to troubleshoot this, I’d greatly appreciate any advice! Are there any steps you recommend for diagnosing the problem? Or does anyone know of a reliable guide for replacing the tailgate assist in a 2016 Silverado? Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem with my 2016 Silverado! Usually, it’s the springs or any worn components that cause issues. Have you checked those yet?

Thanks for the tip! I haven’t checked the springs. How do I access them?

You should be able to access the springs by removing the tailgate cover. Just be careful with the clips; they can break easily!

Great advice! I also wonder if it could be an electrical issue.

Definitely could be an electrical failure! Check the connections and the fuses for any signs of damage.

I faced this issue too and it turned out to be improper installation of the assist kit. Make sure everything is aligned correctly!

Thanks! I might revisit my installation then.

I just love the 2016 Silverado, but the tailgate issues can be so frustrating! You’re not alone in this battle.

True! I guess we bought more than just a truck, we bought some troubleshooting too!

Ha! Absolutely! It feels like a DIY mystery sometimes. I’m tempted to start a detective club for Silverado tailgate issues.

Now that sounds like a fun club! But seriously, are there any specific tools I need for repairs?

You’ll typically need simple hand tools like a socket set and screwdrivers. Nothing too fancy but be ready for some minor elbow grease!

I’ve had my tailgate assist out before and it turned out to be just a loose bolt. Make sure to check everything is tightened down!

A loose bolt can cause so much trouble! I definitely will check for any loose fittings.

Glad we could help you out, the Silverado family sticks together! Let us know what you find after checking all this.

I had the same issue with my 2016 Silverado! First, check the fuse related to the tailgate assist. It’s usually in the fuse box under the hood. If that’s fine, move on to checking the wiring connections for any corrosion.

Great advice, Patrick! I also recommend visually inspecting the tailgate assist mechanism for any signs of wear. Sometimes it’s a simple physical issue that needs fixing.

Yes! And if the fuse and connections all look good, consider checking the tailgate struts. They can weaken over time and affect the assist function. A DIY replacement can save you a trip to the shop!

I’m definitely going to look into that! While I’m at it, I’ll keep an eye out for any visible wear on the tailgate itself.
