2018 Chevy Equinox 1.5 Turbo Engine Problems: What's Going On?

Introduction

I’ve been dealing with some frustrating issues with my 2018 Chevy Equinox, specifically with the 1.5 turbo engine. Many of us have invested a lot in these vehicles, and hearing from fellow owners can really help us diagnose and address these problems. Here’s what I’ve encountered, and I’d love to hear your experiences!

Common Issues

From what I’ve researched and heard from others, here are some common problems associated with the 1.5 turbo engine:

  • Engine Performance: I’ve noticed a lag in acceleration and decreased power, especially on highways. It feels like the engine is struggling sometimes. Has anyone else felt this?
  • Fuel Efficiency: My fuel economy seems to have dropped significantly. I’ve gone from 30 MPG to barely 24. Could this be linked to engine issues?
  • Coolant Leaks: I’ve read reports about coolant leaks leading to overheating. I haven’t experienced this yet, but I’m concerned.
  • Engine Light: The check engine light came on twice for me. Once it was just a minor emission issue, but I fear there might be a deeper problem.

Seeking Solutions

I’m reaching out to see if anyone has:

  • Experienced Similar Problems? I’d love to know if I’m alone in this or if it’s a widespread issue.
  • Advice on Repairs: Any recommended mechanics or DIY fixes?
  • Warranty Issues: Have any of you had success getting repairs covered under warranty?

Conclusion

I think sharing our experiences can significantly help us all in diagnosing these issues. If you have any insights, please share them. I’d appreciate any tips or just understanding that I’m not the only one going through this. Let’s figure out our Equinox problems together!

I’ve been having a lot of issues with my 2018 Equinox’s 1.5 Turbo engine. It frequently stutters during acceleration and I can hear a weird knocking sound. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes! I’ve noticed similar stuttering. I also had a check engine light pop up. It turns out it was a throttle body issue. Might be worth checking out your throttle body as well!

I’ve heard many owners complain about oil consumption in the 1.5 Turbo engine. My dad had to keep topping off oil between changes. Could that be a widespread issue?

Exactly! I’ve also had to add oil frequently, and it makes me wonder if there’s a design flaw. Maybe it’s something the dealership can address?

My Equinox has been emitting a strange smell and there’s a noticeable loss in power! Could it be related to the turbocharger? I’m kind of at my wits’ end here.

That sounds frustrating! It could be a failing turbo. I had the dreaded smell, and it was linked to a coolant leak from the turbo unit.

Has anyone thought about taking their 2018 Equinox to a third-party mechanic for these issues? I’ve heard mixed reviews on how dealerships handle these problems. Just curious.

I’ve actually done that! My mechanic was able to diagnose the throttle body issue quickly and suggested some aftermarket options which saved me a lot of cash. Highly recommend it!

So, I’m not alone in this engine problem saga! My 1.5 Turbo has been creaking and giving off vibrations when idling. What’s up with that?

That could be a flex pipe issue! I had similar symptoms, which led to a repair on that part. It’s common in these engines.

Oil consumption, check engine lights, and now vibrations? What kind of luck are we having with this engine? It’s starting to feel like we were sold a lemon.

Totally get it! It’s absurd! I’m still hoping someone manages to find a solid fix that the rest of us can apply. Anyone tried any permanent solutions?

I don’t mean to be a downer, but I’m really worried about the long-term durability of this engine. Anyone else share that concern?

I share that concern! I just hit 60K miles, and the engine feels off. It’s like I’m driving with a ticking time bomb.

So many problems! It gives me the creeps thinking about it. But hey, at least we have each other to vent to, right? Just needs a little turbo-powered humor!

Haha, true! Just like a turbo, we should keep the pressure on and stay proactive about these issues!

In light of all these problems, some reflections on how we can make better car choices in the future come to mind! It’s possible the market has changed since then, too.

I’ve been hearing that the 2018 Chevy Equinox 1.5 Turbo can have some engine issues. Does anyone know what kind of warranty options are available for repairs?

I just had my turbo replaced under warranty at my dealership. They covered the whole thing, but it took several weeks. Worth checking your coverage!
