Torque Sensor Troubles in My Chevy Malibu - Need Help!

Issues with Torque Sensor in Chevy Malibu

I’m experiencing some challenges with the torque sensor in my Chevy Malibu and hoping to find some guidance here. For those who may not be familiar, the torque sensor plays a critical role in the vehicle’s power steering system, providing real-time feedback to the electronic systems controlling the steering.

Symptoms of a Faulty Torque Sensor

Here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • Steering feels heavy: At times, it seems harder to maneuver, especially during low-speed turns.
  • Warning lights: I’ve seen the power steering warning light on the dashboard flicker intermittently.
  • Unusual noises: There’s a strange grinding noise coming from the steering column when I turn the wheel sharply.

Diagnosis Steps Taken

So far, I’ve taken the following steps to diagnose the issue:

  1. Checked the steering fluid: It’s at the proper level, so I don’t think that’s the culprit.
  2. Ran a diagnostic scan: No error codes were reported, which led me to suspect the torque sensor.
  3. Visual inspection: I couldn’t spot any obvious wiring issues or damage around the sensor.

Questions for the Forum

  • Has anyone had similar issues with their Malibu’s torque sensor?
  • What steps did you take to resolve it?
  • Is it a DIY fix, or should I take it to a mechanic?
  • Any recommended replacement parts or brands that work best?

I’d appreciate any insights or advice from those who have tackled this issue before. Looking forward to hearing your experiences and solutions!

I’ve been having huge torque sensor issues with my Malibu as well. The dashboard light keeps flickering and it feels like the car is stuttering. Any thoughts?

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar problem. My torque sensor threw error code P0657. Have you had any codes read?

P0657 is definitely one I’ve seen before. It indicates a general torque sensor issue. Symptoms include poor acceleration and sometimes stalling. Have you tried checking the wiring?

Wiring issues are common. Mine was a frayed wire that caused intermittent problems. Sometimes it’s just a bad connection. Good luck hunting that down!

Have you guys noticed if the problems started after a cold snap? My Malibu acts up every winter!

Yes! Cold weather really wreaks havoc. I suspect moisture gets into the sensors. There’s definitely a pattern when it comes to cold and torque sensor failures.

So true! I’ve also seen moisture build-up affect sensor performance. Make sure to check the connectors too.

When my torque sensor went bad, I also faced diagnostic challenges. I took it to three different shops before someone found the issue. What a mess!

Ugh, that’s the worst! Sometimes it feels like we’re more knowledgeable than some mechanics! It’s perplexing how they can miss a simple sensor issue.

Three shops? You must have a lot of patience! Couldn’t they just have used a decent diagnostic tool?

Honestly, I think they just don’t want to deal with it sometimes. A good scanner can save a lot of time, but many don’t invest in the right tools.

I mean, if it were up to me, I’d just slap a sticker on it that says ‘check the torque sensor!’ and call it a day! Maybe then they’d pay attention! :joy:

Haha! That sounds like something I’d do! Just be persistent; you’ll find the solution eventually. Good luck!

I’m sorry to hear about your torque sensor issues! They’re tricky, but there are definitely options out there.

Have you looked into the differences between OEM and aftermarket parts? OEM might cost more but can ensure compatibility.

Great point, @whitechristina! OEM parts might be safer, but aftermarket can save you a lot. I found options online starting at $150!

Hey @baguirre, do you know any specific brands for aftermarket sensors? I’d like to hear more about what’s available.

I’ve had good luck with Duralast sensors. They’re fairly priced and come with a decent warranty!

Just keep in mind, @hillbrian, that warranty doesn’t always cover faults after installation. Always double-check return policies!
