I’m currently in the process of retrofitting a 700R4 transmission into my classic Chevy project, and I’m looking for some advice on standalone controllers.
What I’m Looking For
Specifically, I’m interested in:
Recommendations: What standalone controllers have you guys used? Any brands that stand out for reliability or ease of use?
Installation Guidance: If you’ve installed one before, what should I be aware of? Any tips that would make the process smoother?
Comparative Info: How do different controllers affect performance? Are there considerable differences between them that I should know about?
Experience Level
I’m somewhat familiar with wiring and installations, but this is my first time working with an electronic controller for a transmission, so I want to ensure I choose the right solution.
Additional Thoughts
If you’ve dealt with a 700R4, I’d love to hear your experiences – what worked for you and what didn’t? Also, if there are common pitfalls I should avoid, that would be super helpful too!
Thanks in advance for any tips and guidance you can share! Looking forward to your replies.
I’ve been using the EZ-TCU stand-alone controller for my 700R4, and it works great! It offers programmable features, which makes tuning really easy. You can find them around $400 to $500.
I also recommend the Hughes Performance controller. It’s user-friendly and offers solid performance. I’ve had mine for over a year and no issues yet! They’re priced similarly to the EZ-TCU.
I find the conversations about these controllers really insightful! It’s always tough picking the right one. I think doing research on user reviews is crucial.
I installed a stand-alone controller for my 700R4 a few months back. The instructions were surprisingly clear, but the wiring was a challenge. You’ll need a good set of crimpers and connectors. Watch out for those loose grounds, they can cause all sorts of problems.
