Best Manual Trans Options for my LS Swap?

I’m currently planning an LS swap for my Chevrolet vehicle and I’m trying to figure out which manual transmission will work best.

Key Considerations:

  • Engine Compatibility: I know I need something that can handle the torque of an LS engine, but what are the recommended models?
  • Fabrication Needs: Will I need to modify anything on the transmission crossmember or the driveshaft?
  • Clutch Options: What clutch setups are most compatible with an LS swap and the transmissions you recommend?

Popular Manual Transmissions:

  1. T56: A common choice, but what are the downsides?
  2. TKO 600: Is it worth the investment for performance?
  3. Muncie 4-Speed: Retro look but does it hold up?

Performance Enhancements:

  • Are there any performance parts that can enhance these transmissions?
  • Any good guides or resources that detail the installation process?

Experiences:

  • If you’ve done an LS swap with a manual trans, what worked well for you?
  • Share your tips and pitfalls to avoid!

Looking forward to your advice and experiences! Thanks!

If you’re considering an LS swap, the T56 is a popular choice. It offers great gearing options and can handle a lot of torque. Just be aware that it’s a bit pricey and might require some modifications to fit.

I’ve heard great things about the GTO Magnum too! It has a similar setup to the T56 but can handle higher horsepower and torque. Plus, the shifter placement is more favorable for many swaps.

Both options are solid, but don’t overlook the Richmond 5-Speed. It’s a bit old school, but it’s proven durable and provides a good range of gearing. Just make sure it doesn’t impede your speed expectations.

Absolutely! The GTO Magnum is fantastic for those looking for something robust. It’s definitely worth considering if you’re after something that can take a beating.

I think the best choice varies based on your build and goals. Are you aiming for street driving or tracking? That can change what’s best for you.

Exactly! For a daily driver, you might want something that’s smooth on the highway. For racing, maybe lean towards the T56 for its aftermarket support.

I’m leaning towards the T56 as well. Plus, the aftermarket support is huge which means easier fixes and part availability. Anyone have experience with installing one?

I’ve installed a T56 and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Just take your time with the shifter position and compatibility with your driveshaft. You’ll be fine! And don’t forget the clutch options.

Great tip! The clutch setup is key. I’ve also heard mixed reviews about the durability of the aftermarket clutches for those mods.

Don’t forget to factor in the little things. Shift knobs, installs, even comfort. Get it set up so you enjoy driving it, or it becomes a chore!

So true! I’ve had builds where I loved the power, but the driving position just ruined the fun. Comfort matters!

I found that using a T56 from a Camaro was one of the best decisions for my LS swap. It fit nicely with minimal alignment issues. Just make sure you have the right adapter for the driveshaft!

Did you have any issues with the shifter location? I heard it can be a mess depending on the chassis.

I had a nightmare with shifter alignment when I installed a TKO 600. It ended up being way too far back! Ended up having to modify the tunnel a bit.

That’s a bummer! I opted for a Tremec TKO, and thankfully had no tunnel issues, just had to adjust some linkage parts.

I found that getting the right motor mounts was key. I used some OEM mounts and they really helped with the alignment. Would recommend checking that before starting.

I second that! Good mounts make a world of difference. I actually went with custom mounts to get a perfect fit after several attempts with off-the-shelf ones.

How much did those cost? I’ve been looking into that approach myself.

I paid about $400 for custom mounts, worth it for the fit. But for linkage, I had to scour forums to find a proper setup for my LS and T56 combo.
