Can I use a CHAdeMO to CCS adapter with my Chevy Bolt EV?

Seeking Advice on CHAdeMO to CCS Adapter for Chevy Bolt EV

I’ve recently been looking into the possibility of using a CHAdeMO to CCS adapter to charge my Chevy Bolt EV at some of the CHAdeMO charging stations in my area. Given the growth of electric vehicle infrastructure, I wonder how feasible this setup is, especially considering how the Bolt is manufactured and its charging capabilities.

Questions I’m Considering:

  • Availability: Are there reliable adapters currently on the market?
  • Compatibility: Does anyone have experience using such adapters with the Bolt? I’ve heard mixed responses regarding compatibility.
  • Charging Speeds: How does the charging speed compare when using CHAdeMO versus CCS, especially in real-world situations?
  • Safety and Warranty: Would using an adapter affect my vehicle’s warranty or raise any safety concerns?

What I’ve Found So Far:

I’ve seen a few conversations online, particularly in the Nissan Leaf community, which often discuss adaptations and charging solutions across different models. However, specifics about Chevy vehicles seem scarce.

It seems that most charging stations lean towards CCS, and I want to ensure I can maximize my chances of finding compatible charging options when on the road. If anyone has insight or experiences to share, it would be greatly appreciated!

Summary:

I’m hoping to gather as much information as possible from those who may have worked with CHAdeMO to CCS adapters, especially for Chevy models. Any help or advice would go a long way in alleviating my concerns and helping me make a more informed decision about my charging options.

Thanks in advance for any input!

I use an adapter made by a well-known brand, and it works fine, but I did hear there are some limitations with charging speeds.

I’ve tried a couple of different models. The one I settled on seems reliable, but the charging speed can drop significantly. It’s something to be aware of!

That’s interesting! Did you notice any overheating issues during the process?

Not really overheating, but I did notice the adapter can get quite warm. Just make sure to monitor it while charging!

You should also check the warranty on the adapter. Some companies provide great support if things go wrong. It could save you a lot of hassle.

Good point! It’s wise to have a backup plan if anything goes awry. Have any of you had to use warranty support?

@jessica12, I’ve had to replace mine once due to a defect. The company was pretty good about it, but it took some time to process.

It’s great to hear about different experiences! Are there specific adapters that are recommended for the Bolt, or should I source based on user reviews?

I would say check out reviews specifically for Bolt owners. Some have had success with the smaller brands!

Honestly, I just grabbed the first one I saw and hoped for the best. So far, it’s been a good gamble, but I wouldn’t recommend that approach!

Clearly, this is trial and error for many! Humorously, I like to call it the ‘charger lottery’ since you never know what you might end up with! :joy:

That’s a perfect way to describe it! But we need to boost awareness about compatibility!

For sure! It’s all about spreading knowledge. Let’s keep sharing our experiences so more Bolt owners can make informed decisions!

I love that idea! I wish I had known more before diving in, but now I’m a lot wiser.

I’ve been using a CHAdeMO to CCS adapter with my Bolt EV for a few months now. The charging speed isn’t as fast as direct CCS, but it certainly gets the job done if you’re in a pinch!

That’s interesting! Can you share more about the specific brands you’ve tried? I’m considering getting one myself.

I prefer to stick with original adapters whenever possible. I’ve heard mixed reviews about some third-party options regarding efficiency.

Good point! I’d love to know which brands have a better reputation for performance and safety.
