How's the gas mileage for a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500?

I’m considering a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 as my next truck and I’m really curious about its gas mileage. I’ve heard mixed reviews and want to get a better understanding from real owners.

A Few Questions:

  • What kind of mileage are you getting?
  • Are there any specific driving conditions where you find it excels or falls short?
  • Is the mileage different based on the engine option?

I primarily do a mix of highway and city driving, so any insight on that would be super helpful. Also, if you have tips on how to improve fuel efficiency, please share!

Thanks in advance for any input. Looking forward to hearing your experiences!

Additional Context:

I’m also looking to budget for maintenance and fuel costs if I decide to pull the trigger on this purchase. Knowing what others have experienced would really help me make an informed decision.

Note:

If you own or have owned this model, your input would be invaluable. Please share your experiences or any advice you might have!

I’ve had my 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 for over a year now. In the city, I usually get around 15 MPG, but on the highway, it can go up to 22 MPG! Towing my trailer tends to drop it down to around 12 MPG though.

That’s pretty much what I’ve experienced too, kserrano. My city mileage hovers around 14-16 MPG, depending on traffic. Highway driving gives a great boost to around 20 MPG for me!

When I tow, I really notice the drop in mileage. With my boat attached, it can dip to 10 MPG! It makes a noticeable difference on long trips. Anyone else experience extreme declines while towing?

Definitely, howardjohn! I thought I was the only one. Towing is brutal on gas mileage, but surprisingly, my truck handles it well otherwise.

I usually keep my Silverado loaded with tools, but I find that it doesn’t affect my city MPG as much as I expected. It stays around 14-15 MPG even when packed!

That’s interesting, knightrachel! I thought carrying a heavy load would significantly hurt mileage. Seems like these trucks are tough!

Overall, I think the gas mileage is decent for a truck this size, but some people seem to have unrealistic expectations. It’s still a full-size pickup!

True that, gregorywelch! I’ve heard people expect it to be like a compact car, which is just silly. It’s all about knowing what you’re driving.

I’m curious about how driving habits affect mileage. Does anyone have tips on how to maximize MPG? I try to drive smoothly, but I’m open to suggestions!

Great question, riosjared! I’ve found that maintaining proper tire pressure helps a lot! Every little bit counts!

On a lighter note, I joked with my buddy that towing his boat with my Silverado is like lugging around a fat cat—totally eats up the gas! :joy: But seriously, I appreciate this truck’s power.

I’ve heard that keeping your tire pressure at the manufacturer’s recommendation can really help with gas mileage. Has anyone tried that with their Silverado?

Absolutely! Also, consider regular oil changes with high-mileage oil. It can make a real difference in performance and economy.

I always try to avoid sudden acceleration and hard braking. Smooth driving can improve my fuel efficiency quite a bit. Anyone else noticed this?

Definitely! I read somewhere that maintaining a steady speed, especially on the highway, is key to better mileage with a truck.

At the end of the day, I think it’s all about small adjustments. For instance, if you’re carrying extra weight, consider unloading your truck to save fuel.

Great point! I also noticed that using cruise control can help maintain a consistent speed.

What about after-market modifications? Has anyone added a cold air intake or upgraded exhaust, and did it help with mileage?

I looked into cold air intakes! They can improve airflow and slightly enhance fuel economy. Just depends on the setup.
